I grew longer hair using the No Poo Method. Just keep reading to find out how you can grow your hair using this natural method too.
You’ve probably heard of the no-poo method in some place or another. I started researching it because of Farah Dhukai…I love that girl!
What everyone really wants to know is if it works. Does it make my hair fall out? Will it lose it’s shininess? Am I going to smell like vinegar? Does your hair really get clean this way? What about the lather? I know this because I had the same questions and reservations. But…my hair wasn’t growing, it was dull and what did I have to lose? (beside my hair of course:) It didn’t occur to me that my shampoo and conditioner were leaving behind buildup on my scalp and that’s the reason it wasn’t growing. I tried it out and I was amazed at the results!
I didn’t have to wash my hair for as long as 5 days because I had no oil on my scalp like usual. And somehow my hair was shiny…like blinging in the sun shiny. My hair grew at an astonishing rate… a good foot in one year. It was amazing! I didn’t have that horrible buildup that you get (you know what I’m talking about…the itchy gunk) and my scalp was itch free. Want to know the recipe? Keep reading.
How to Make it:
I use 2 tablespoons of baking soda and put it into a measuring cup. I add 10-20 drops of Peppermint essential oil as well as 10 drops of rosemary essential oil (Dr. Axe has a little bit different recipe here). I add warm to hot water and stir together. I then add it to my squeeze bottle and add some more water at a cooler temperature. The baking soda should be completely dissolved. It should look like regular water, no cloudiness.
I then pour about 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar into my other squeeze bottle. I put 20 drops of lavender essential oil in and add warm water. If that’s too much ACV for your liking, just do 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water. And voila. Your “shampoo and conditioner”. I talk about other uses for Apple Cider vinegar in this post if you want to learn more ways to use it.
Once I get in the shower, I use it exactly like a normal shampoo. I squeeze some onto my hair and scalp and massage, but only onto the scalp. Avoid rubbing your ends. It won’t lather obviously, but you will feel where it goes because of the cooling effect of the peppermint oil. FYI both of the oils help with hair growth.I talk about that in this post. I massage my scalp as if I’m at a spa. This helped with the hair growth as well. Gets the blood flowing. After I’ve massaged all of the “shampoo” in I rinse. Your hair should feel and sound squeaky clean. This means no build up to prevent your hair from growing.
After it’s rinsed out, you’ll want to add your “conditioner”. I add this all over my hair, covering the scalp and ends. No need to massage it in, just make sure it’s thoroughly worked into your hair. Then I put my hair up and go about the rest of my shower routine. Beware- this stuff can burn if it gets in your eyes so be sure to keep your hair pinned back or use one of those cute little shower caps. My shower routine is done and I just need to rinse. I do it the same as I would any other conditioner. I even add a 30 second shot of cool or cold water at the end. Don’t worry, once you rinse all the ACV out and your hair dries, you won’t smell it. The key is to let it dry though.
Once I began no-pooing (hehehe) I noticed that I lost less hair in my comb. I also noticed that I didn’t have to wash my hair as often. It was shiny too. No greasy scalp and no itchy buildup to be found. Did I mention how long my hair got? The best thing about no-poo is it’s cheap and you can make it your own. Keep in mind that I have curly, thick, course hair. I’ve seen some testimonies where they have a different hair type and they just didn’t like it.
So go ahead. you know you want to. Just give it a try. Let me know if you get the same results as I do or if it just wasn’t working for you.
